What to expect during a Home Study?

A home study is a comprehensive and rigorous process. We're not going to lie, it's tedious. But good news, Choice staff are here to help every step of the way.

Application

The family fills out an application and submits it to Choice Adoptions along with the required documentations. Our Program Director then reviews the application for approval. Please allow 7 business days.

Assigned Social Worker

Homestudy Packet

After a family's application is approved and they contract with Choice Adoptions, they will be sent the home study packet. The home study packet includes all the paperwork we are required by the states of Oregon and Washington to collect. This includes things like adoption education, background check information, medical evaluation, reference letters, tax information, etc.

When the family completes the required adoption training and home study paperwork, Choice Adoptions assigns a social work for the home study.

Home Assessments

Assessments of the family’s living environment, including safety, cleanliness, and suitability for a child.

4

Interviews

In-depth conversations with prospective parents to assess your motivations, understanding of adoption, and preparedness to raise a child.

Interview will also be conducted with any other children or adults living in the home.

At minimum, at least 2 home visits are required.

Home Study Report

Your case worker writes up your home study report. Once your home study report is completed, you will receive two copies that you can send to your placement agency.

Reviewing Documents

Post Placement

After placement, one or more social workers will visit with the family to ensure both the and child and family are adjusting well and have all the necessary resources. After each visit the social worker will draft a post placement report. These reports will then be sent to your placement agency. Post placement requirements vary depending on the state, but generally involve two to six reports. After all post placement visits are completed, Choice Adoptions can recommend the finalization of your adoption.

Choice Adoptions has extensive experience in providing post placement supervision and conducting the necessary reports. Our social workers and clincians are here to support you throughout your adoption journey, including after finalization.
